Swimming Injury Physiotherapy for Women in Clapham
Shoulder pain on your front crawl, a stiff neck when you breathe, or knee pain from breaststroke? Olivia offers swimming injury physiotherapy for women at our Clapham clinic.
Common Swimming Injuries
As part of our sports physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats swimming injuries in Clapham, from pool and lido swimmers to open water and triathlon. Treatment focuses on strength, shoulder control and building your training back up gradually.
Swimmer's Shoulder
Pain at the front or top of the shoulder from repeated overhead strokes, often linked to the rotator cuff. See our rotator cuff and shoulder impingement pages.
Shoulder Instability
A shoulder that feels loose or slips, more likely if you have very flexible joints. See shoulder instability and hypermobility.
Neck and Upper Back Pain
Stiffness from turning to breathe or holding your head up in breaststroke. See our neck physiotherapy page.
Breaststroke Knee
Pain on the inside of the knee from the breaststroke kick. Strength work and adjusting your training can help. See our knee physiotherapy page.
Lower Back Pain
Aching in your lower back, sometimes from arching during breaststroke or butterfly. See our lower back pain page.
Building Up Safely
Sudden increases in distance or intensity are a common cause of swimming injuries. Olivia can help you plan your training load.

- Can I keep swimming with a sore shoulder?
Often, with changes. You may need to reduce distance, change stroke or use a pull buoy while you build strength. Olivia will advise you.
- What causes swimmer's shoulder?
It usually comes from doing a lot of overhead strokes, especially if your distance increases quickly or your shoulder muscles tire.
- Is swimming good if I am hypermobile?
Swimming is often recommended for hypermobility, but shoulder strength and control are important. Olivia can tailor exercises to you.
- Do you assess swimming technique?
Olivia does not coach technique, but she will look at how your shoulder moves and can suggest changes to discuss with your coach.
- Do I need a referral?
No, you can book directly with Olivia without a referral.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
