Understanding Lower Back Pain
As part of our back pain physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats lower back pain in Clapham, finding the cause of your pain and helping you move, work and exercise with confidence.
What Causes Lower Back Pain?
The NHS describes lower back pain as very common. It usually isn’t caused by anything serious and often comes from the muscles, joints or ligaments of the back. Common causes include:
- Muscle strain or back spasm
- Stiff joints, including facet joint pain
- A slipped or bulging disc
- Posture, long periods of sitting or lifting
- Pregnancy, recovering after birth and menopause
Lower Back Pain Symptoms
- Aching, stiffness or sharp pain across your lower back
- Pain on one side, sometimes spreading into the buttock
- Pain when bending, lifting, sitting or getting up
- Muscle tightness or spasm
- Pain into your leg, which may be sciatica
How Long Does It Last?
The NHS says back pain usually improves within a few weeks, but it can sometimes last longer or keep coming back. Physiotherapy can help if pain isn’t settling or keeps returning.
How Physiotherapy Helps
The NHS lists physiotherapy, exercise and hands-on treatment among the treatments for back pain. Depending on your assessment, treatment may include:
- Hands-on treatment to ease pain and stiffness
- Exercises to restore movement
- Progressive strengthening for your back, hips and core
- Advice on sitting, lifting, sleeping and work set-up
- A plan to return to exercise and reduce flare-ups
Easing Lower Back Pain at Home
The NHS recommends:
- Staying as active as possible and continuing your daily activities
- Gentle exercises and stretches
- Using heat or ice packs
- Taking anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen if suitable for you
Long periods of bed rest usually slow recovery.
Lower Back Pain in Women
Women’s back pain is often linked to life stages. Back pain is very common in pregnancy, lifting and feeding your baby can strain your back after birth, and aches can increase around menopause. Olivia factors these into your treatment.
Back Pain or Pelvic Pain?
Pain low down at the back can come from the spine, the sacroiliac joints or the hips. Olivia will assess you thoroughly to find the source, as treatment differs.
When to Get Urgent Help
The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E if you have back pain or sciatica with:
- Numbness around your bottom or genitals
- Sciatica in both legs, or numbness or weakness in both legs
- Difficulty peeing, or loss of control of your bladder or bowels
These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome, which needs emergency treatment.
See a GP if your pain isn’t improving after a few weeks, or comes with unexplained weight loss or a high temperature.

Lower Back Pain FAQs
- Should I rest with lower back pain?
Usually not. The NHS advises staying as active as possible, as long periods of rest can slow recovery. Gentle movement and the right exercises help most people.
- Why does my lower back hurt on one side?
One-sided lower back pain is often from a strained muscle or a stiff joint in the back or pelvis. Olivia will assess you to find the cause.
- What's the best exercise for lower back pain?
There isn’t one best exercise for everyone. Walking, gentle mobility and strengthening for your back, hips and core usually help, and Olivia will tailor a plan to you.
- Is heat or ice better for lower back pain?
Either can help. Use whichever eases your pain more.
- Can lower back pain come back?
Yes, it can. Staying active, building strength and adjusting how you sit and lift can reduce flare-ups.
- Do I need a referral for lower back pain physiotherapy?
No, you can book directly with us. Olivia is happy to work alongside your GP if needed.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
