Hamstring, Calf and Groin Strain Physiotherapy in Clapham

A sudden sharp pain or pull in the back of your thigh, your calf or your groin while running or playing sport? Olivia offers muscle strain physiotherapy for active women at our Clapham clinic.

Understanding Muscle Strains

As part of our sports physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats hamstring, calf and groin strains in Clapham, helping you recover well and get back to your sport with less risk of it happening again.

What Is a Muscle Strain?

A strain is when a muscle is stretched or torn. In sport, the hamstrings at the back of the thigh, the calf and the groin muscles are most often affected.

Symptoms

According to the NHS, a hamstring injury can cause sudden sharp pain, a snapping or popping feeling, tenderness, swelling and bruising.

The First Few Days

The NHS recommends PRICE for the first 2 to 3 days: protect, rest, ice for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours, compress and elevate. Avoid heat, massage and alcohol at first.

How Long Does It Take?

The NHS says mild strains often improve within days, but more severe injuries can take weeks or months to heal.

How Physiotherapy Helps

The NHS says a physiotherapist can teach exercises to speed up your recovery and help prevent further hamstring injury. Olivia will help you:

  • Restore movement once the early pain settles
  • Rebuild strength with a progressive programme
  • Return to running, sprinting and sport step by step
  • Reduce the risk of it happening again

Groin Strains

Groin strains are common in sports with kicking, twisting or changing direction, such as football, netball and hockey. Pain at the front of the hip or groin can also come from the hip joint, so Olivia will check this.

Preventing Repeat Injuries

The NHS advises building up fitness gradually, warming up before exercise and not training when you feel very tired. A strength programme can help keep you injury-free.

What Happens at Your First Appointment

Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:

  • Talk through how the injury happened, your sport and your goals
  • Assess the injured muscle, your strength and how you move
  • Explain what she has found and agree a plan with you
  • Give you exercises to start at home
