Sprained Ankle Physiotherapy in Clapham
Gone over on your ankle and it is swollen, bruised and painful to walk on? Or does it keep giving way? Olivia offers sprained ankle physiotherapy for women at our Clapham clinic, to help you recover fully and reduce the risk of it happening again.
Understanding a Sprained Ankle
As part of our foot and ankle physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats sprained ankles in Clapham, from fresh injuries to ankles that feel weak or unstable months later.
What Is a Sprained Ankle?
A sprain is an injury to the ligaments around a joint. Ankle sprains usually happen when you roll or twist your foot, for example on uneven ground, a kerb or while running or playing sport.
Symptoms
According to the NHS, symptoms include pain, tenderness or weakness, swelling, bruising and difficulty putting weight on your ankle.
The First Few Days
The NHS recommends PRICE for the first 2 to 3 days: protect, rest, ice for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours, compress with a bandage and elevate your ankle on a pillow.
How Long Does It Take?
The NHS says most sprains feel better within 2 weeks, but you should avoid strenuous exercise such as running for up to 8 weeks. Severe sprains can take months.
How Physiotherapy Helps
Olivia will help you:
- Get your ankle moving and walking normally again
- Rebuild strength in your ankle, calf and hip
- Retrain your balance with progressive exercises
- Plan a safe return to running, sport and exercise classes
Weak or Unstable Ankles
Some people are left with an ankle that feels wobbly or keeps going over. Balance and strengthening exercises can help build stability and reduce the risk of it happening again.
When to Get Urgent Help
Go to A&E if you heard a crack, your ankle has changed shape, or your foot is numb or has changed colour, as you may have broken a bone. Call NHS 111 if you cannot walk on it or the pain or swelling is severe.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through how you injured your ankle, your symptoms and your activity goals
- Assess your foot, ankle, calf, knee and hip, and watch how you walk
- Explain what she has found and agree a treatment plan with you
- Give you exercises and practical advice to start at home

Sprained Ankle FAQs
- Should I walk on a sprained ankle?
Rest it for the first 2 to 3 days, then start moving it as soon as pain allows. Gentle movement helps stop it getting stiff.
- When can I run again after a sprained ankle?
The NHS advises avoiding strenuous exercise like running for up to 8 weeks. Olivia will help you build back up gradually based on your strength and balance.
- Why does my ankle keep giving way?
After a sprain, the ligaments and the muscles that control your ankle can be weaker, and your balance can be affected. Targeted exercises help rebuild this.
- Do I need an X-ray for a sprained ankle?
Not usually. You may need one if you cannot put weight on your ankle or there are signs of a broken bone.
- Do I need a referral?
No, you can book directly with Olivia without a referral.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
