Back Pain Physiotherapy for Women in Clapham
Lower back pain, sciatica, a stiff upper back or pain that keeps coming back? Olivia offers back physiotherapy for women at our Clapham clinic, with a specialist understanding of how pregnancy, birth and menopause affect your spine.
Back Pain Conditions and Treatments
As part of our MSK physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats back pain in Clapham, from lower back pain and sciatica to disc problems, upper back stiffness and back pain linked to pregnancy and menopause.
Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain is very common, often linked to posture, muscle strain, pregnancy or life stage. Physiotherapy finds the cause and gets you moving comfortably again.
Sciatica
Shooting pain, tingling or numbness down the buttock and leg, often from an irritated nerve in the lower back. Physiotherapy eases symptoms and restores movement.
Slipped or Bulging Disc
A slipped, bulging or herniated disc can cause back pain and sometimes sciatica. Most improve without surgery, and physiotherapy helps you recover safely.
Back Spasm and Muscle Strain
A sudden spasm or pulled back muscle can be very painful and make it hard to move. Physiotherapy eases pain quickly and helps you return to normal activities.
Upper Back and Rib Pain
Upper back and rib pain is often linked to stiffness, posture, desk work or pregnancy. Physiotherapy eases tension and restores comfortable movement and breathing.
Facet Joint Pain and Stiffness
Stiffness and aching in the lower back, often worse first thing or when leaning backwards, can come from the small joints of the spine. Physiotherapy helps restore movement.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine that can cause pain, stiffness and muscle imbalance in adults. Physiotherapy improves mobility, strength and comfort.
Spinal Stenosis
Narrowing in the spine can cause back pain and aching, heavy or tingling legs when walking or standing, often easing when you sit or bend forward. Physiotherapy helps you stay active.
Hypermobility and Back Pain
Hypermobility, which is more common in women, can leave your back feeling achy, unstable or easily strained. Physiotherapy builds strength and control to support your joints.
Back Pain in Pregnancy
Back pain is common as your bump grows and your posture changes. Olivia offers specialist antenatal physiotherapy to keep you comfortable and active.
Back Pain After Birth
Feeding, lifting and carrying your baby while your core recovers can lead to back pain. Olivia offers specialist postnatal physiotherapy to help you recover.
Back Pain, Menopause and Bone Health
Back aches can increase around menopause, when women also lose bone more quickly. Physiotherapy builds strength to support your spine and protect your bones.
Tailbone (Coccyx) Pain
Pain at the base of your spine, often worse when sitting, can follow a fall or childbirth. Physiotherapy can ease pressure and reduce pain.

Back Pain FAQs
- What conditions does back physiotherapy treat?
Olivia treats a wide range of back problems, including lower back pain, sciatica, slipped and bulging discs, back spasm, upper back and rib pain, facet joint pain, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, hypermobility, tailbone pain and back pain linked to pregnancy, birth and menopause.
- Why see a female-focused physiotherapist for back pain?
Women’s back pain is often linked to life stages such as pregnancy, recovering after birth and menopause, as well as the pelvis and pelvic floor. Olivia factors these into your assessment so your treatment fits you.
- Should I rest if I have back pain?
Usually not. The NHS advises staying as active as possible and continuing your daily activities, as this helps you recover faster than bed rest. Gentle movement and the right exercises are key.
- When should I get urgent help for back pain?
The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E if you have back pain with numbness around your bottom or genitals, numbness in both legs, or difficulty peeing or controlling your bowels. These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome. See your GP if pain is not improving after a few weeks, or comes with unexplained weight loss or a fever.
- Can pregnancy or menopause cause back pain?
Yes. Back pain is very common in pregnancy as your posture and the way you move change. Around menopause, women lose bone more quickly and changes in muscle strength can contribute to aches. Read more about our antenatal and menopause physiotherapy.
- Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you can book directly with us. Olivia is happy to work alongside your GP or consultant if needed.
- What happens in a first appointment?
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes. Olivia will talk through your symptoms and history, assess how your back, pelvis and hips move, then build a personalised plan that may include hands-on treatment, exercises and advice on posture and movement.
- How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the cause and how long you’ve had symptoms. Many women notice improvement within a few sessions, while longer-standing problems such as scoliosis may benefit from an ongoing plan.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
