Hypermobility FAQs
- What is the difference between being flexible and having a hypermobility condition?
Many people have very flexible joints with no problems. It becomes a condition such as HSD or hEDS when it causes symptoms like pain, fatigue, frequent sprains or dislocations.
- Can physiotherapy help hypermobility?
Yes. The NHS says treatment focuses on improving muscle strength and fitness so your joints are better protected, and lists physiotherapy as part of this.
- Why see a female-focused physiotherapist for hypermobility?
Hypermobility conditions are more often diagnosed in women, and pregnancy, periods, menopause and pelvic floor health can all affect symptoms. Olivia takes all of this into account.
- Can you diagnose hEDS?
Olivia can assess your joints, including the Beighton score, and explain what she finds. A formal diagnosis of hEDS is made by a doctor, so she may suggest you speak to your GP.
- What exercise is best for hypermobility?
The NHS suggests low-impact exercise such as swimming, and avoiding overstretching your joints. Olivia will build a strength programme that suits you and progresses gradually.
- Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you can book directly with Olivia without a referral.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
