Postnatal Physiotherapy in Clapham
Leaking, a tummy gap, scar pain or not feeling ready to get back to exercise after having a baby? Common doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. Olivia offers specialist postnatal physiotherapy at our Clapham clinic, whether your baby is weeks or years old.
Postnatal Physiotherapy Conditions and Treatments
As part of our women’s health physiotherapy service, Olivia offers postnatal physiotherapy in Clapham, with a thorough postnatal assessment and personalised plan to help you recover after a vaginal birth, tear or caesarean section.
Postnatal MOT (Postnatal Check)
A full postnatal check of your pelvic floor, tummy gap, scar and posture, with a personalised plan to help you recover and return to exercise safely.
Diastasis Recti (Tummy Gap)
A gap or bulge down the middle of your tummy, doming when you sit up, or a weak core after birth? Physiotherapy helps you rebuild core strength safely.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Leaking, urgency or heaviness after birth is common, but it isn’t something you have to accept. Pelvic floor physiotherapy helps you recover strength and control.
Urinary Incontinence
Leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise is common after birth. Targeted pelvic floor training can reduce leaks and help you feel confident again.
Bowel Incontinence and Sphincter Tears
Difficulty controlling wind or poo after birth, especially after a tear involving the anal sphincter, is more common than you might think. Physiotherapy can help you regain control.
Pelvic Organ Prolapse
A feeling of heaviness or a bulge in the vagina can develop after pregnancy and birth. Physiotherapy is an effective first-line treatment for prolapse symptoms.
Perineal Tears
Perineal tears are common during vaginal birth, ranging from grazes to deeper tears. Healed tissue can stay tight or painful, but often responds well to treatment.
C-Section Recovery
A caesarean is major abdominal surgery. Your scar can become tight, sensitive or numb, and your core and pelvic floor may need support to recover fully.
Painful Sex After Birth
Pain during sex after having a baby is common, often linked to scar tissue, a tight pelvic floor or hormonal changes. Physiotherapy can help restore comfort.
Pelvic Girdle Pain (SPD)
Pain at the front or back of the pelvis can continue after birth for some women. Physiotherapy can ease pain and help you move comfortably again.
SIJ (Sacroiliac Joint) Pain
Deep aching in your lower back or buttocks, worse with standing, walking or getting up from a chair, can follow pregnancy and birth. Physiotherapy can help ease it.
Postnatal Back Pain
Feeding, lifting and carrying your baby put extra load on your back while your core is still recovering. Physiotherapy helps you build strength and move with less pain.
Hip Pain
Hip pain after birth is often linked to muscle weakness or changes in how you move while your core and pelvic floor recover. Physiotherapy restores strength and comfort.
Tailbone Pain
Tailbone pain after birth is common, often from pressure during delivery. It can make sitting painful, and targeted treatment can significantly reduce it.
Posture
Feeding, carrying and lifting your baby can lead to rounded shoulders, tight muscles and neck or upper back pain. Physiotherapy helps you move and sit more comfortably.
De Quervain's (Mummy Thumb)
De Quervain’s tenosynovitis causes pain on the thumb side of the wrist, often from repeatedly lifting your baby. Physiotherapy can ease pain and help you grip comfortably.
Return to Exercise and Running
Want to get back to the gym, classes or running after birth? Olivia assesses your pelvic floor and core and builds a step-by-step plan to return safely.

Postnatal FAQs
- When should I start postnatal physiotherapy?
Many women book an assessment after their six-week check with the GP, once early healing has taken place. If you have significant pain, leaking or other concerns before then, it’s worth getting advice sooner. There’s no upper time limit, and many women see real improvement months or even years after giving birth.
- What can I expect from a postnatal physiotherapy session?
Your first session starts with a detailed conversation about your birth, your symptoms and your goals. Olivia will then carry out a physical assessment, which may include an internal pelvic floor examination if you consent. From this, she’ll create a personalised plan that may include exercises, hands-on treatment, education and guidance on returning to activity.
- Who can benefit from postnatal physiotherapy?
Any woman who has given birth can benefit, whether the birth was vaginal or by caesarean, straightforward or complicated. You don’t need obvious symptoms, as many women find a postnatal assessment helpful simply to understand how their body has changed and check they’re recovering well.
- What can postnatal physiotherapy help with?
Postnatal physiotherapy can help with pelvic floor problems, urinary or bowel incontinence, prolapse, diastasis recti, back and pelvic girdle pain, C-section or perineal scar discomfort, painful sex, posture, and returning to exercise or sport.
- Is it safe to have postnatal physiotherapy after a C-section?
Yes. A caesarean is major abdominal surgery, which can affect your core, posture and scar tissue. Olivia can support your recovery with appropriate exercises, scar massage techniques and guidance on gradually returning to daily activities.
- How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your symptoms and goals. Some women find two or three sessions give them all the guidance they need, while others benefit from a longer programme. Olivia will give you a realistic idea of timescales at your first appointment and review your progress as you go.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
