Neck Arthritis (Cervical Spondylosis) Physiotherapy in Clapham
Neck and shoulder stiffness that comes and goes, or headaches from the back of your neck? Neck arthritis is common and very manageable. Olivia offers thorough, unhurried care at our Clapham clinic.
Understanding Neck Arthritis
As part of our neck physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats neck arthritis (cervical spondylosis) in Clapham, helping you ease pain and stiffness and stay active for the long term.
What Is Cervical Spondylosis?
According to the NHS, cervical spondylosis is caused by wear and tear to the bones and discs in your neck. It is a normal part of ageing and is sometimes called neck arthritis.
Who Gets It?
It mostly affects people over 40, and many people with changes on a scan have no symptoms at all. A previous neck injury can make it more likely.
Symptoms
The NHS lists neck and shoulder pain or stiffness that can come and go, and headaches that often start at the back of the neck.
Menopause and Neck Pain
Many women notice more joint aches and stiffness around menopause. Olivia takes this into account and can link your care with our menopause physiotherapy.
How Physiotherapy Helps
Olivia will help you:
- Ease pain and stiffness with hands-on treatment
- Improve neck and upper back movement
- Strengthen the muscles that support your neck and shoulders
- Manage flare-ups with a plan you can follow at home
Exercise and Posture
The NHS recommends gentle neck exercises and improving your posture. Regular movement, breaks from your desk and a supportive pillow can all help.
When You Might Need Further Tests
Most people do not need a scan. If you have arm pain, pins and needles or weakness, Olivia will check your nerves and refer you to your GP if needed.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your symptoms, work, activity levels and stage of life, including perimenopause or menopause
- Assess your neck, upper back, shoulders and how you move
- Explain what she has found and agree a treatment plan with you
- Give you exercises and practical advice to start at home

Neck Arthritis FAQs
- Is cervical spondylosis the same as neck arthritis?
Yes, cervical spondylosis is the medical name for age-related wear and tear in the neck, often called neck arthritis.
- Can physiotherapy help cervical spondylosis?
Yes. Physiotherapy can ease pain and stiffness, improve movement and strength, and help you manage flare-ups yourself.
- Will neck arthritis get worse?
Not necessarily. Symptoms often come and go, and staying active with the right exercises helps many people keep pain under control.
- Is it safe to exercise with neck arthritis?
Yes. Gentle, regular exercise is one of the best things you can do. Olivia will show you which exercises suit you and how to progress them.
- When should I get urgent help?
Call 999 if you have problems walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or loss of coordination. Get urgent advice from NHS 111 if you have weakness or pins and needles in your arms or legs.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
