Knee Replacement Rehabilitation in Clapham
Recovering from a knee replacement and want to bend your knee fully, walk confidently and get back to the things you love? Olivia offers one-to-one knee replacement rehabilitation at our Clapham clinic.
Recovering From a Knee Replacement
As part of our knee physiotherapy for women, Olivia offers knee replacement rehabilitation in Clapham, helping you recover safely and get the most from your new knee.
Your Recovery Goals
Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust describes the early goals of physiotherapy after a knee replacement as restoring movement, including bending your knee to 90 degrees and being able to straighten it, regaining thigh strength and reducing swelling.
The First Six Weeks
NHS guidance advises that you can’t drive for at least six weeks, and only once you can walk without aids and safely do an emergency stop. Most people use crutches at first, moving to one crutch once they can walk without a limp. Always follow your surgical team’s advice.
Swelling and Stiffness
Swelling is normal and can last a few months or longer. NHS guidance suggests ice for 15 to 20 minutes, three to four times a day at first, and raising your leg. Regular exercises help prevent stiffness.
How Physiotherapy Helps
Once you’re home, one-to-one physiotherapy can help you progress safely. Depending on your assessment, treatment may include:
- Exercises to improve knee bending and straightening
- Progressive strengthening for your thighs, hips and calves
- Walking practice and moving off walking aids
- Balance training to reduce your risk of falls
- A plan to return to the activities you enjoy
Getting Back to Activities
Many people return to walking, swimming, cycling, golf, Pilates and gym work after a knee replacement. Olivia can help you build up gradually, following your surgeon’s advice.
Prehab Before Surgery
Getting stronger before your operation can help you recover more quickly afterwards. Olivia can create a prehab plan if you’re waiting for surgery. Read more about knee osteoarthritis.
When to Get Medical Help
Contact your surgical team, GP or NHS 111 straight away if you notice sudden severe pain or swelling in your calf, a high temperature, discharge from your wound, worsening joint symptoms or new numbness. Call 999 if you have chest pain or sudden shortness of breath.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your operation, your surgeon’s advice, your recovery so far and your goals
- Assess your knee, hip and ankle, your strength and how you move
- Explain what she has found and agree a treatment plan with you
- Give you exercises and practical advice to start at home

What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
