Hip Replacement Rehabilitation in Clapham
Recovering from a hip replacement and want to get back to walking, exercise and the things you love? Olivia offers one-to-one hip replacement rehabilitation at our Clapham clinic, with a personalised plan to rebuild your strength and confidence.
Recovering From a Hip Replacement
As part of our hip physiotherapy for women, Olivia offers hip replacement rehabilitation in Clapham, helping you recover safely and get the most from your new hip.
Recovering From a Hip Replacement
A hip replacement can ease pain and improve movement, but recovery takes several months. According to the NHS, most people go home one to three days after the operation and have a follow-up appointment around 6 to 12 weeks afterwards.
Regular exercise and physiotherapy are a key part of getting the best result from your new hip.
The First Six Weeks
The NHS advises walking every day as far as is comfortable and following the exercises your physiotherapist has recommended. It also advises:
- Waiting at least six weeks before driving, and checking with your doctor
- Avoiding crossing your legs or bending your hip beyond 90 degrees
- Avoiding low chairs, jumping, sudden turns and activities with a high risk of falling
- Avoiding heavy lifting until your surgeon is happy
Always follow the specific advice from your surgical team.
How Physiotherapy Helps
Once you’re home, one-to-one physiotherapy can help you progress safely. Depending on your assessment, treatment may include:
- Progressive strengthening for your hips, legs and core
- Exercises to restore movement and flexibility
- Walking practice, including moving off walking aids
- Balance training to reduce your risk of falls
- A step-by-step plan to return to the activities you enjoy
Getting Off Walking Aids
Most people use crutches or a walking stick for the first few weeks. Moving off them too soon can lead to a limp, while relying on them for too long can slow your progress. Olivia can help you work out when and how to reduce them safely.
Strength and Balance After Surgery
The muscles around your hip are often weak before surgery, especially if you’ve had pain for a long time. Building strength in your buttocks and thighs helps you walk without a limp, manage stairs and feel steady on your feet.
Returning to Exercise and Activities
Many people return to walking, swimming, cycling, golf, Pilates and gym work after a hip replacement. Olivia can help you build up gradually, following your surgeon’s advice, so you can get back to what matters to you.
When to Get Medical Help
Contact your surgical team, GP or NHS 111 straight away if you notice:
- Increasing redness, heat, swelling or discharge from your wound
- A high temperature or feeling unwell
- Pain, swelling or redness in your calf
- Sudden severe hip pain, or your leg looking shorter or turned out
Call 999 if you have chest pain or sudden shortness of breath.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your operation, your surgeon’s advice, your recovery so far and your goals
- Assess your hip, pelvis and back, your strength and how you move
- Explain what she has found and agree a treatment plan with you
- Give you exercises and practical advice to start at home

Hip Replacement Rehab FAQs
- When should I start physiotherapy after a hip replacement?
You’ll usually see a physiotherapist in hospital before you go home. Private physiotherapy can start once you’re home, often in the first few weeks, to help you progress safely. Olivia will always follow your surgeon’s guidance.
- How long does it take to recover from a hip replacement?
Recovery usually takes several months. Many people return to most everyday activities within about six weeks, but strength and confidence can keep improving for many months.
- When can I drive after a hip replacement?
The NHS advises waiting at least six weeks and checking with your doctor before you drive.
- Can I do exercise classes after a hip replacement?
Many people return to low-impact exercise such as walking, swimming, cycling and Pilates. Olivia can help you build up gradually and advise which movements to avoid, based on your surgeon’s guidance.
- Can physiotherapy help before a hip replacement?
Yes. Strengthening exercises before surgery, sometimes called prehab, can help you recover more quickly afterwards.
- Do I need a referral for hip replacement physiotherapy?
No, you can book directly with us. Olivia is happy to work alongside your GP, consultant or surgeon if needed.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
