Osteoporosis Physiotherapy and Exercise in Clapham
Diagnosed with osteoporosis and not sure what exercise is safe, or worried about breaking a bone? Olivia offers osteoporosis physiotherapy and exercise for women at our Clapham clinic, to help you stay strong and confident.
Understanding Osteoporosis
As part of our bone health physiotherapy for women, Olivia helps women with osteoporosis in Clapham build strength, improve balance and exercise safely, alongside the treatment from their GP or specialist.
What Is Osteoporosis?
According to the NHS, osteoporosis is a health condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. It develops slowly and is often only found after a fracture.
Who Gets It?
Women are at higher risk, especially after menopause. Other risk factors include taking steroids for a long time, a family history, low body weight, smoking and heavy drinking.
Symptoms
The NHS says osteoporosis is not usually painful until a bone breaks. The wrist, hip and spine are the most common places for fractures.
Exercise for Your Bones
The Royal Osteoporosis Society recommends impact exercise, such as brisk walking, stair climbing or heel drops, and strength exercise using your body weight, bands or weights, built up gradually.
How Physiotherapy Helps
Olivia will help you:
- Build a safe, progressive strength and impact programme
- Improve your balance to reduce the risk of falls
- Move with confidence in daily life, exercise classes and the gym
- Manage pain and posture if you have had a fracture
Exercise and Medicine Work Together
The Royal Osteoporosis Society says exercise is not a replacement for osteoporosis medicine. Olivia works alongside the treatment your GP or specialist recommends.
Your Pelvic Floor
Impact and strength exercise puts extra load on your pelvic floor. If you have leaking or heaviness, Olivia can help you build up safely with our pelvic floor physiotherapy.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your diagnosis, scan results, any fractures and your current activity
- Assess your strength, balance, posture and how you move
- Explain what she has found and agree a plan with you
- Give you a safe exercise programme to start at home

Osteoporosis FAQs
- Is it safe to exercise with osteoporosis?
The Royal Osteoporosis Society says most people with osteoporosis can exercise safely. If you have had several broken bones or spinal fractures, get advice from your doctor or a physiotherapist first.
- Can exercise reverse osteoporosis?
Exercise cannot cure osteoporosis, but it helps keep your bones and muscles as strong as possible and can reduce your risk of falls.
- Can I lift weights with osteoporosis?
Many women can, with the right technique and a gradual build-up. Olivia will help you choose suitable exercises and loads.
- Are there movements I should avoid?
It depends on your bones and any fractures. Olivia will explain which movements suit you and how to do everyday tasks like lifting and bending safely.
- Do I need a referral?
No, you can book directly with Olivia without a referral.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
