Antenatal Physiotherapy in Clapham
Pelvic girdle pain, back pain or leaking in pregnancy? Common doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. Olivia offers specialist pregnancy physiotherapy at our Clapham clinic, helping you stay comfortable and prepare for birth.
Pregnancy Physiotherapy Conditions and Treatments
As part of our women’s health physiotherapy service, Olivia offers antenatal (pregnancy) physiotherapy in Clapham, helping you stay comfortable, active and confident from early pregnancy through to birth.
Pregnancy MOT (Antenatal Assessment)
A full antenatal check of your pelvic floor, posture, tummy and movement, with a personalised plan to keep you comfortable through pregnancy and help prepare your body for birth.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
The pelvic floor takes enormous strain during pregnancy, which can cause leaking, heaviness or discomfort. An antenatal assessment identifies the cause and guides a personalised treatment plan.
Pelvic Girdle Pain (SPD)
Pelvic girdle pain (PGP), also called symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), causes pain at the front or back of the pelvis, groin and hips. Physiotherapy can ease pain and help you stay active.
Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain is common in pregnancy as your posture shifts and your spine adapts to your growing bump. Physiotherapy helps you stay comfortable and keep moving.
Sciatica
Sharp or shooting pain into the buttock and leg is common in pregnancy and is often linked to the pelvis or lower back. Physiotherapy can find the source and ease your symptoms.
Rib and Upper Back Pain
As your bump grows, your ribs and upper back take extra load, causing aching or sharp pain under the ribs. Gentle mobility work, posture advice and breathing techniques can ease it.
Round Ligament Pain
Round ligament pain is a sharp or aching sensation in the lower tummy or groin, common in the second trimester. Physiotherapy can ease discomfort with gentle stretches and movement advice.
Tailbone (Coccyx) Pain
Pain at the base of the spine can develop in pregnancy, often worse when sitting or getting up from a chair. Physiotherapy can ease pressure on the area and reduce pain.
Hip Pain
Hip pain is common in pregnancy as your posture, weight and the way you move change. Physiotherapy assesses how you move and provides targeted exercises to ease pain.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Fluid retention in pregnancy can press on the median nerve at the wrist, causing tingling, numbness or pain in the hand. Physiotherapy can help with splinting advice, exercises and positioning.
Diastasis Recti (Tummy Gap)
The tummy muscles naturally separate to make room for your baby, which can cause core weakness and back pain. Physiotherapy provides assessment and safe exercises during pregnancy.
Urinary Incontinence and Urgency
Leaking when you cough, sneeze or laugh is common in pregnancy, but it isn’t something you have to accept. Guided pelvic floor exercises can reduce leaks now and after birth.
Constipation
Hormonal changes and pressure from your growing baby can slow your bowels in pregnancy. Physiotherapy offers advice on toilet position, breathing and pelvic floor relaxation to help.
Perineal Massage and Birth Preparation
Learn perineal massage from around 34 weeks, plus breathing, pushing positions and pelvic floor relaxation, so you feel physically prepared and confident going into birth.

Antenatal FAQs
- Is physiotherapy safe during pregnancy?
Yes, antenatal physiotherapy is safe at all stages of pregnancy. Treatment is adapted for pregnancy, using gentle, evidence-based techniques that are appropriate for you and your baby, and Olivia works alongside your midwife or consultant where needed.
- When should I start antenatal physiotherapy?
As early as you like. You don’t need to be in pain to benefit, and an early assessment can pick up potential issues before they worsen and set you up with the right exercise programme from the start.
- Should I do pelvic floor exercises during pregnancy?
Yes. NICE guidance encourages pelvic floor muscle training in pregnancy, as it helps prevent symptoms such as leaking. Many women aren’t sure they’re doing them correctly, so an assessment can check your technique. Some women with pelvic pain need to relax these muscles before strengthening them.
- Is it safe to exercise during pregnancy?
For most women, yes. The NHS recommends around 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, avoiding sports with a risk of falling or bumping your tummy, and avoiding lying flat on your back for more than a few minutes in later pregnancy. If you have pain or a pregnancy complication, check with your midwife first.
- How does physiotherapy help prepare you for labour?
Antenatal physiotherapy helps prepare your body for labour in several ways: improving pelvic floor awareness and control, keeping you mobile and comfortable, and teaching breathing and relaxation techniques. Olivia also advises on birth positions and pushing, so you can approach labour feeling physically and mentally prepared.
- Do you provide physiotherapy after childbirth?
Yes. Our postnatal physiotherapy supports your recovery whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or a caesarean section, helping you heal, rebuild strength and return to the activities you love at a pace that’s right for you.
- How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your symptoms and goals. Some women benefit from a single assessment and home programme, while others need ongoing treatment through their pregnancy.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
