Hypermobility Syndrome (HSD) Physiotherapy in Clapham
Flexible joints that ache, feel stiff, sprain easily or leave you exhausted? Olivia offers hypermobility syndrome physiotherapy for women at our Clapham clinic, at a pace that works for your body.
Understanding Hypermobility Syndrome
As part of our hypermobility physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats joint hypermobility syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) in Clapham, helping you build strength, reduce flare-ups and do more of what you enjoy.
What Is Hypermobility Syndrome?
According to the NHS, joint hypermobility syndrome means having very flexible joints that cause symptoms. It is now often called hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD).
Symptoms
The NHS lists pain and stiffness in joints and muscles, tiredness, frequent sprains and dislocations, poor balance or coordination, and bladder or bowel problems.
What Causes It?
The NHS says it can run in families and is linked to differences in collagen, which makes ligaments looser. It cannot be prevented.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Your GP can assess your flexibility using the Beighton score and may arrange tests to rule out other conditions. Olivia can also check your joints and explain what she finds.
How Physiotherapy Helps
The NHS says treatment focuses on improving muscle strength and fitness to protect your joints. Olivia will help you:
- Build strength and control around your joints
- Improve balance and body awareness
- Pace activity to reduce flare-ups and fatigue
- Return to exercise you enjoy, safely
Exercise That Suits You
The NHS suggests low-impact exercise such as swimming and avoiding overstretching. Pilates-style and strength work can also be adapted to suit you.
Living Well Day to Day
Supportive shoes, a healthy weight and avoiding repetitive strain on your joints can all help, according to the NHS.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your symptoms, history of sprains or dislocations, fatigue and goals
- Assess your joints, strength, balance and how you move
- Explain what she has found and agree a plan with you
- Give you a manageable exercise programme to start at home

Hypermobility Syndrome FAQs
- Can physiotherapy help hypermobility syndrome?
Yes. The NHS lists physiotherapy to improve muscle strength and fitness so your joints are better protected.
- Is HSD the same as hEDS?
No. Both involve hypermobility, but hEDS has stricter diagnostic criteria and can involve other parts of the body. Physiotherapy helps with both.
- Should I stretch if I am hypermobile?
Usually you need less stretching and more strength. Olivia will explain which movements suit your joints.
- Will hypermobility get better with age?
The NHS says joints often become less flexible with age, but symptoms vary. Building strength helps at any age.
- Do I need a referral?
No, you can book directly with Olivia without a referral.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
