Osteopenia Physiotherapy and Exercise in Clapham
Told you have osteopenia after a DEXA scan and wondering what to do next? Olivia offers osteopenia physiotherapy and exercise for women at our Clapham clinic, to help you look after your bones.
Understanding Osteopenia
As part of our bone health physiotherapy for women, Olivia helps women with osteopenia in Clapham build a safe, bone-friendly exercise routine they can keep up for life.
What Is Osteopenia?
According to the NHS, osteopenia means your bone density is lower than average but not low enough to be osteoporosis. It is found with a DEXA scan.
Is Osteopenia Serious?
Osteopenia is common, especially after menopause, and is not a disease in itself. It is a sign to look after your bones, and your GP may look at your overall fracture risk.
Exercise for Your Bones
The Royal Osteoporosis Society recommends impact exercise, such as brisk walking, stair climbing, jogging or dancing, and strength exercise, built up gradually.
Healthy Bones Day to Day
The NHS also recommends a diet with enough calcium and vitamin D, not smoking and keeping alcohol within recommended limits.
How Physiotherapy Helps
Olivia will help you:
- Build a strength and impact routine that suits your fitness
- Progress safely, including in the gym or with running
- Improve balance and confidence
- Fit bone-friendly exercise into a busy life
Menopause and Your Bones
Bone loss speeds up around menopause. Olivia can link your care with our menopause physiotherapy.
Your Pelvic Floor
If impact exercise causes leaking or heaviness, our pelvic floor physiotherapy can help you build up comfortably.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your scan results, health, activity levels and goals
- Assess your strength, balance, posture and how you move
- Explain what she has found and agree a plan with you
- Give you a safe exercise programme to start at home

Osteopenia FAQs
- What is the difference between osteopenia and osteoporosis?
Both mean lower bone density, measured by a DEXA scan. Osteopenia is a milder reduction. Osteoporosis means bones are weaker and more likely to break.
- Can exercise help osteopenia?
Exercise helps keep your bones and muscles as strong as possible. The Royal Osteoporosis Society recommends a mix of impact and strength exercise.
- Is running good for osteopenia?
For many women, yes, as it is an impact exercise. Olivia can help you build up gradually and check it suits you.
- Will osteopenia turn into osteoporosis?
Not always. Looking after your bones with exercise, diet and lifestyle can help. Your GP can advise on your fracture risk and whether you need treatment.
- Do I need a referral?
No, you can book directly with Olivia without a referral.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
