Shin Splints Physiotherapy in Clapham

Aching pain along the front of your shins during or after running? Shin splints are common when you start running or increase your training. Olivia offers thorough, unhurried care at our Clapham clinic.

Understanding Shin Splints

As part of our foot and ankle physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats shin splints in Clapham, helping you ease pain and build back up to running, including after having a baby.

What Are Shin Splints?

According to the NHS, shin splints cause pain and tenderness along the front of your lower leg, usually brought on by exercise such as running.

What Causes Them?

The NHS says they are common if you have started exercising after not being active for a while, run on hard surfaces, or have poor technique. Increasing your training too quickly is a common trigger.

How Long Do They Last?

Shin splints usually get better within a few weeks with rest and self-care.

What Helps at Home

The NHS suggests painkillers, ice packs for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours, switching to gentler exercise such as swimming or yoga for a while, and supportive running shoes.

How Physiotherapy Helps

The NHS says you may need physiotherapy if shin splints do not get better. Olivia will help you:

  • Reduce your running load while the pain settles
  • Strengthen your calves, ankles and hips
  • Look at your running technique and training plan
  • Build a gradual return to running

Returning to Running After a Baby

If you are getting back to running after pregnancy, our postnatal return to running programme helps you build up safely.

When to Get Help

See your GP if the pain is getting worse or not improving. Call NHS 111 if the pain is severe or you have injured your shin.

What Happens at Your First Appointment

Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:

  • Talk through your symptoms, training, running shoes and any recent changes in your exercise
  • Assess your foot, ankle, calf, knee and hip, and watch how you walk
  • Explain what she has found and agree a treatment plan with you
  • Give you exercises and practical advice to start at home
