Plantar Fasciitis Physiotherapy in Clapham
Sharp pain under your heel with your first steps in the morning, or after sitting for a while? Plantar fasciitis is very common and usually gets better with the right care. Olivia offers thorough, unhurried care at our Clapham clinic.
Understanding Plantar Fasciitis
As part of our foot and ankle physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats plantar fasciitis in Clapham, helping you ease heel pain and get back to walking, running and standing comfortably.
What Is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is pain on the bottom of your foot, around your heel and arch, caused by straining the thick band of tissue that runs along the sole of your foot.
Symptoms
According to the NHS, the pain is often much worse when you start walking after sleeping or resting, eases as you move, then gets worse again after standing or walking for a long time.
Who Gets It?
The NHS says you are more likely to get it if you are 40 to 60, overweight, wear shoes with poor support, have recently started exercising more on hard surfaces, or have tight calf muscles.
What Helps at Home
The NHS suggests resting and raising your foot, ice packs, supportive cushioned shoes, insoles or heel pads, gentle stretching and low-impact exercise such as swimming. Avoid high heels, flip-flops and walking barefoot on hard floors.
How Physiotherapy Helps
The NHS lists physiotherapy exercises as a treatment for plantar fasciitis. Olivia will help you:
- Stretch and strengthen your calf and foot muscles
- Manage how much walking, standing and running you do while it settles
- Choose supportive footwear for work, home and exercise
- Build back up to your normal activities
Other Treatments
If it does not improve, your GP or specialist may suggest steroid injections or shockwave therapy. Surgery is rarely needed. A podiatrist can advise on insoles.
When to See Your GP
See your GP if the pain is severe or getting worse, has not improved after 2 weeks of self-care, or you have tingling or numbness in your foot.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your symptoms, footwear, work and the exercise you do
- Assess your foot, ankle, calf, knee and hip, and watch how you walk
- Explain what she has found and agree a treatment plan with you
- Give you exercises and practical advice to start at home

Plantar Fasciitis FAQs
- How long does plantar fasciitis last?
Many people improve within a few weeks with self-care, but it can take several months to settle fully, especially if you have had it for a long time.
- Can physiotherapy help plantar fasciitis?
Yes. The NHS lists physiotherapy exercises as a treatment, and Olivia will tailor stretching and strengthening exercises to you.
- Should I stop exercising with plantar fasciitis?
You may need to reduce high-impact activity such as running for a while, but staying active with low-impact exercise like swimming or cycling is usually fine.
- What shoes are best for plantar fasciitis?
Shoes with good arch support and a cushioned heel are best. Avoid high heels, flip-flops and walking barefoot on hard floors.
- Do I need a scan for heel pain?
Usually not. Plantar fasciitis can normally be diagnosed from your symptoms and an examination.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
