Trapped Nerve in the Neck Physiotherapy in Clapham
Sharp, burning pain from your neck down your arm, or pins and needles in your fingers? A trapped nerve in the neck is painful, but most people recover well. Olivia offers thorough, unhurried care at our Clapham clinic.
Understanding a Trapped Nerve in the Neck
As part of our neck physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats trapped nerves in the neck (cervical radiculopathy) in Clapham, helping you ease arm pain, get moving and return to normal life.
What Is a Trapped Nerve in the Neck?
A trapped or pinched nerve happens when a nerve root in your neck is irritated or squashed as it leaves the spine. Doctors call it cervical radiculopathy or cervical nerve root pain.
Symptoms
According to Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, symptoms include burning or shooting pain into the arm, tingling, numbness and sometimes weakness. Arm pain is often worse than neck pain.
What Causes It?
Normal age-related changes in the neck, such as a bulging disc, thicker ligaments or bony changes around the joints, can narrow the space where the nerve leaves the spine. Often there is no single injury.
How Long Does It Last?
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust says about 80% of people improve within 10 to 12 weeks. Numbness can take longer to settle than pain.
Keep Moving
Staying active and carrying on with daily activities helps recovery. Some ups and downs in pain are normal while the nerve settles.
How Physiotherapy Helps
Olivia will help you:
- Ease pain with gentle hands-on treatment and positions that take pressure off the nerve
- Restore neck and upper back movement
- Build strength in your neck, shoulders and arm
- Adjust how you work, sleep, feed or carry your baby
Pain Relief and Your GP
Your GP can advise on pain relief, including medicines for nerve pain. Injections or surgery are only considered for a small number of people whose symptoms do not improve.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your symptoms, where you feel them and what makes them better or worse
- Assess your neck, upper back, shoulders and how you move
- Explain what she has found and agree a treatment plan with you
- Give you exercises and practical advice to start at home

Trapped Nerve in the Neck FAQs
- How do I know if I have a trapped nerve in my neck?
Pain, tingling or numbness that travels from your neck into your shoulder, arm or hand is a common sign. Olivia will check your nerves, strength and reflexes to find out what is going on.
- Can physiotherapy help a trapped nerve in the neck?
Yes. Physiotherapy helps ease pain, keep you moving and build strength while the nerve settles, and most people recover without surgery.
- What is the best sleeping position for a trapped nerve in the neck?
Many people find lying on their back or on the less painful side with a supportive pillow helps. Olivia can suggest positions that suit you.
- Do I need a scan?
Most people do not need a scan. One may be suggested if your symptoms are severe, getting worse or not improving with treatment.
- When should I get urgent help?
Get urgent medical help if you have significant weakness in one or both arms, nerve pain in both arms, or problems with balance, walking or coordination.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
