Wrist Sprain and Fracture Rehabilitation in Clapham
Wrist stiff, weak or sore after a sprain or a broken wrist? Physiotherapy can help you regain movement, grip and confidence. Olivia offers one-to-one rehabilitation at our Clapham clinic.
Recovering From a Wrist Sprain or Fracture
As part of our elbow, wrist and hand physiotherapy for women, Olivia offers wrist sprain and fracture rehabilitation in Clapham, helping you get back to everyday tasks, work and exercise.
Wrist Sprains
A wrist sprain is an injury to the ligaments, often from a fall onto an outstretched hand. It can cause pain, swelling and weakness. If you can’t move your wrist or it looks out of shape, get it checked for a fracture.
Broken Wrist
A broken wrist is a common injury, often from a fall. Most are treated in a cast or splint, and some need surgery. Your hospital team will guide the early stages.
After Your Cast Comes Off
Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust explains that when your cast comes off, your wrist will feel stiff and sore because the joints haven’t been moving. Mild swelling and discolouration are also common for a while.
How Physiotherapy Helps
- Exercises to restore wrist and finger movement
- Strengthening to rebuild grip
- Treatment for stiffness and swelling
- Advice on returning to work, driving, lifting and exercise
- Exercises for your elbow and shoulder if they’ve become stiff
Using Your Hand Normally
NHS guidance notes that using your hand normally wherever possible will speed your recovery, and that most people regain full use of their hand and arm.
Wrist Fractures and Bone Health
A broken wrist from a simple fall can sometimes be a sign of low bone density, especially after menopause. It’s worth asking your GP about your bone health. Read more about menopause physiotherapy.
When to Get Help
Go to A&E if you think you’ve broken your wrist. After treatment, contact your hospital team if you have increasing pain, swelling, numbness or your fingers change colour.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your injury, any surgery or cast, and what you want to get back to
- Assess your hand, wrist, elbow, neck and how you use your arm
- Explain what she has found and agree a treatment plan with you
- Give you exercises and practical advice to start at home

Wrist Rehab FAQs
- How long does a broken wrist take to recover?
Bones usually heal within around six weeks, but it can take several months to regain full movement and strength. Physiotherapy can help speed this up.
- Is stiffness normal after a wrist cast?
Yes. Stiffness and soreness are normal when your cast comes off, and improve with exercise and using your hand.
- How long does a wrist sprain take to heal?
Mild sprains often improve within a few weeks. More severe sprains can take longer, and physiotherapy helps restore strength and stability.
- When can I go back to the gym after a wrist fracture?
Usually once you’ve regained movement and some strength. Olivia will help you build up gradually, including weight-bearing exercises like press-ups and yoga.
- Do I need a referral for wrist fracture physiotherapy?
No, you can book directly with us. Olivia is happy to work alongside your GP or consultant if needed.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
