Back pain, stiffness or muscle imbalance linked to scoliosis? Physiotherapy can help you feel stronger, more comfortable and confident staying active. Olivia offers thorough, unhurried care for adult scoliosis at our Clapham clinic.
Understanding Scoliosis in Adults
As part of our back pain physiotherapy for women, Olivia treats adults with scoliosis in Clapham, helping you manage pain and stiffness and keep doing the things you enjoy.
What Is Scoliosis?
According to the NHS, scoliosis is where the spine twists and curves to the side. It most often starts in children aged 10 to 15, but it can also develop in adults.
Scoliosis in Adults
Some adults have had scoliosis since childhood, while others develop degenerative scoliosis, which the NHS describes as caused by wear and tear of the spine with age. The NHS notes back pain is more common in adults with scoliosis.
Symptoms
- A visible curve in the spine, or one shoulder or hip higher than the other
- Back pain or stiffness
- Muscle tightness or fatigue on one side
- Uneven posture or clothes hanging unevenly
How Physiotherapy Helps
The NHS encourages general exercise for people with scoliosis. Depending on your assessment, physiotherapy may include:
- Exercises to improve strength and endurance
- Mobility work to ease stiffness
- Advice on posture and positions that feel comfortable
- Guidance on staying active with sport, Pilates or the gym
Scoliosis, Pregnancy and Menopause
Pregnancy and menopause can change how your back feels if you have scoliosis. Olivia understands these life stages and can adapt your treatment. Read more about antenatal and menopause physiotherapy.
Staying Active
Most people with scoliosis can take part in sport and exercise. The NHS advises that general exercise is good for overall health and shouldn’t be avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise.
When to Get Urgent Help
The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E if you have back pain with:
- Numbness around your bottom or genitals
- Numbness or weakness in both legs
- Difficulty peeing, or loss of control of your bladder or bowels
These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome, which needs emergency treatment. See your GP if your pain isn’t improving, or comes with unexplained weight loss or a high temperature.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first appointment lasts 60 minutes and takes place in a private room at our Clapham clinic. Olivia will:
- Talk through your scoliosis history, your symptoms and your goals
- Assess your back, pelvis and hips, your strength and how you move
- Explain what she has found and agree a treatment plan with you
- Give you exercises and practical advice to start at home

Scoliosis FAQs
- Can physiotherapy fix scoliosis?
Physiotherapy doesn’t usually straighten the curve in adults, but it can ease pain and stiffness, improve strength and help you stay active.
- Can I exercise with scoliosis?
Yes. Most people with scoliosis can exercise, and the NHS encourages general exercise. Olivia can help you choose what suits you.
- Is scoliosis painful?
Not always. Many people have no pain, but adults with scoliosis are more likely to have back pain, which physiotherapy can help manage.
- Can scoliosis get worse in adulthood?
It can in some cases, particularly with age-related changes. See your GP if you notice your curve changing or new symptoms.
- Do I need a referral for scoliosis physiotherapy?
No, you can book directly with us. Olivia is happy to work alongside your GP or consultant if needed.
What our patients say
What I’ve appreciated most is how comfortable and at ease she makes you feel. She is kind, understanding and non judgemental, which makes talking about things that can sometimes feel quite personal so much easier. She always takes the time to listen and explains everything clearly, and the exercises are tailored to what I feel comfortable with.
I’m really grateful for all her support and would definitely recommend Olivia to anyone looking for postnatal or pelvic floor support.
